Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Zendaya slink into slip dresses
Celebs are slipping into slinky slip dresses this summer.
Though the slip may be an easily forgettable undergarment, the silky silhouette continues to pop up as outerwear on the red carpet.
Like chokers and chunky, platform sandals, the style's resurgence stems from a recycled '90s fad. Carolyn Bessette's iconic ivory Narciso Rodriguez gown from her 1996 nuptials to John F. Kennedy Jr. comes to mind. As does the shimmering Calvin Klein number Gwyneth Paltrow wore the same year to the Oscars while holding hands with ex Brad Pitt.
The trend resurfaced in Helmut Lang and Nina Ricci's 2013 collection. This summer, it's noticeably become a go-to option on red carpets, extending the trend of underwear as outerwear we saw with corsets earlier this year.
Alison Brie
Glow star Alison Brie selected a sapphire, custom Jason Wu gown for the premiere of the Netflix series in June. She paired the number, which featured diagonal ruching across the waist and a vertical ruffle, with black peep-toe pumps.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is consistently slipping up. The Fetish singer embraced the layered slip dress trend in a short black and white look by designer Victor Glemaud at Sirius XM Studios last month.
At May's Met Gala, where she and her boyfriend The Weeknd made their couple debut, Gomez's plunging Coach creation featuring a lace neckline and texture from added embellishments hit the trend on the head.
Zendaya
Spider-Man: Homecoming actress Zendaya turned to her own line when selecting a dress for the Kids' Choice Awards in March. She put her own spin on the trend by accessorizing the $38, carrot-colored Daya By Zendaya dress with charcoal boots.
Mandy Moore
At the June premiere of 47 Meters Down, Mandy Moore turned heads in a copper, floor-length gown by the London-based fashion brand Galvan. Taking inspiration from her gown, the This Is Us actress rocked apricot glam.
Robin Wright
House of Cards actress Robin Wright sauntered the Cannes carpet in a jewel-tone slip dress in May, that, similar to Brie's, highlighted her eyes. She playfully paired the floor-length Michelle Mason creation with colorful accessories: a fuschia shoe and blue clutch.
Camila Cabello
Camila Cabello scorched the Billboard Music Awards carpet in May wearing a sheer, fire engine red design by Jonathan Simkhai. The former member of Fifth Harmony threw a matching robe over her beaded ensemble that she wore with gilded hoop earrings and large rings.
Soon, even little girls can get in on the slip trend, if their parents find that appropriate. The new collection from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Kids Supply includes a leopard slip dress with a slit and black, lace trim. *Insert thinking face emoji here.*
