Pope Francis pledges visit to Italy quake devastation

Pope Francis pledged Sunday to visit the central Italy towns devastated by last week's earthquake "as soon as possible," while a local prosecutor said substandard construction may be responsible for some of the 290 deaths. Heavy equipment was digging into rubble Sunday as hopes faded that more survivors would be unearthed amid the debris from Wednesday's magnitude-6.2 quake. In the regional capital of Rieti, prosecutor Giuseppe Saieva said property owners who contracted shoddy work could be held responsible for contributing to the damage. Saieva said last week's tragedy may have been more than an unavoidable natural disaster.

Colin Kaepernick sits out national anthem

San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem until "there's a significant change" in America on race relations. The quarterback refused to stand during the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Addressing reporters from his locker at the team's training facility Sunday, Kaepernick said: "I'll continue to sit. I'm going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me, this is something that has to change, and when there's significant change — and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way it's supposed to — I'll stand." USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell said, "More power to him." Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and Vikings' Alex Boone ripped Kaepernick for lack of respect.

Two men charged in Chicago shooting death of Dwyane Wade's cousin

Police charged two men with murder for the fatal shooting death of the cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, officials said Sunday. Nykea Aldridge, 32, a mother of four, was pushing a baby stroller Friday afternoon in Chicago's South Side when she was shot. Police said she was not the intended target of the shooting. Aldridge’s child was not injured. A Chicago Police Department spokesman said two brothers, Darwin, 26, and Derren Sorells, 22, were charged. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed Saturday that the shooting is a reason why African-American voters will back his candidacy. Actor Don Cheadle vehemently disagreed. The Trump camp shot back with this.

A handout combination image provided by the Chicago Police Department shows brothers Darwin Sorrells, 26, left, and Derren Sorrells, 22, right, who were arrested and charged by the Chicago Police Department in connection with the shooting death of Nykea Aldridge on Aug.28, 2016.

Cowboys announce Tony Romo has broken bone in back

The Dallas Cowboys announced Saturday that quarterback Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back. He suffered a brutal hit from Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril in Thursday night's preseason game. "We're confident that he's going to be coming back and playing football for us this year," coach Jason Garrett said, but provided no timetable on Romo's return. Even though the Cowboys aren't better off without Romo, their rookie backup, Dak Prescott, adds a different dimension to the offense: A better ability to make plays with his legs.
