Classes begin Aug. 16 in new school
BAY VIEW - St. Augustine Preparatory Academy will officially open on June 26 and will begin classes on Aug. 16.
The school, 2607 S. Fifth St., is a non-denominational Christian school which is poised to become one of the highest performing schools in the nation, school officials say, noting that its 12-acre campus is home to one of the most advanced learning facilities in the state.
Augustine Prep, as it will commonly be called, includes flexible learning spaces, advanced classroom technologies, state-of-the-art STEM labs, and high-performance athletic and performing arts facilities, according to a recent press release.
Its curriculum is based on the high expectations the school has for every student, and will be taught by top educators who show students the same love and compassion each of us is shown through Christ, the press release said.
“Every aspect of our school is designed to help our students succeed and prepare for college,” said Alfonso Carmona, superintendent of Augustine Prep. “Our learning spaces will encourage positive teacher and student interactions. Our classrooms and labs will utilize the latest technology to help our students prepare for careers in the technical age. And our athletic, performing arts and extracurricular facilities will teach our students perseverance, grit and sportsmanship.
“Augustine Prep students will become part a high-performing, supportive and loving school community, where faith and scripture are infused into everything we do.”
Plans for the four-story, $90 million school took a while to develop but kept to a schedule along the way to completion.
The major interior work, including the foundation, framing, plumbing and electrical, was completed in March, with cosmetic work such as paint, flooring and cabinetry completed since that time.
Both construction and enrollment have remained on schedule as planned and school leadership is looking forward to officially opening its doors next week.
Augustine Prep announced on June 13 that it has finalized its leadership team, which, in addition to Carmona, includes Josephine Gomez as high school principal, Nathan Carlberg as elementary school principal, Kelsey Brenn as chief financial officer, Jim Watkins as director of Christian formation, Matt Miller as athletic director; Jennifer Hamilton as director of family and community engagement, and Chris Sosnay as director of development.
“Our leadership team will be vital in the process of making Augustine Prep one of the highest performing [urban] schools in the nation,” Carmona said. “Through our rigorous application and interview process, we ensured that this team, and all our staff, are driven by a deeply held belief in the transformative power of education on lives and communities.”
The school has also been aggressively hiring teaching staff for 50 open positions. The process is nearing finalization, although a few teaching positions remain open.
As of March, more than 700 applications had been received for approximately 50 teaching positions at the school, drawing candidates from 39 states. Earlier in month, officials said the school is looking to reach its enrollment goal of 600 this summer.
“Passionate and accredited teachers from across the country are drawn to our vision,” Carmona said. “We are creating a team of educators and leaders who are not only highly qualified, but are also deeply driven to help our students to become persons of high character.”
Augustine Prep is now enrolling students in grades K4, K5, first, second, third, sixth and ninth grades. It will eventually enroll 2,500 children of all grade levels by the 2020-2021 school year.
