Cudahy — The original South Shore YMCA, a long-time fixture in Milwaukee’s South Shore neighborhoods, reopened to the public as a fitness and community center on Oct. 22 under a new name and new operator.

Youth in Motion (YIM), a non-profit organization founded and operated by local residents, is offering a variety of programs at the Cudahy facility, 3244 E. College Ave.

With the support of the city and other local communities, YIM’s staff and volunteers have tirelessly worked to restore the facility as a cornerstone of Milwaukee’s South Shore, according to Saif Tarawneh, executive director of the YIM South Shore Center.

Among other services, YIM will offer:

  • weight room and personal training
  • fitness room and group exercise classes
  • swimming pool and lessons
  • therapy pool and hot tub
  • basketball, volleyball, racquetball and soccer leagues and recreation
  • music and dance classes
  • ACT and other educational courses
  • child care

YIM also plans to offer Zumba, yoga, spinning, water aerobics, martials arts, and other classes to accommodate the community’s needs, Tarawneh said in a press release.

Many of the interior facilities have been remodeled and updated, and the center will open with its aquatics center, fitness center, sports center, gymnasium, and education center fully operational, as well as its outdoor facilities and newly renovated lobby and group exercise rooms.

The mayors of Cudahy, South Milwaukee, Saint Francis, and Oak Creek were in attendance to commemorate the opening of the facility on Oct. 22.

YIM is currently pre-registering members.  Those who sign up before November will have the registration fee waived, and members who pre-pay for one year will receive one month free.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee announced Jan. 13, 2015, that it would be closing the South Side YMCA as part of its bankruptcy reorganization that year. The bankruptcy also affected other YMCA sites, some of which were sold to group that includes the Waukesha YMCA. The South Shore YMCA had remained closed until YIM took over recently.
