Two brothers, ages 5 and 2, managed to drive their mother’s Ford Focus three miles Monday in West Virginia before authorities were notified.

The 5-year-old operated the brake and gas pedals and his 2-year-old brother steered, navigating in the direction of their grandfather’s farm 7-miles away, CNN reports

The two guided the vehicle on windy roads, through an intersection and even a right turn, CNN reports. They knew the way, considering the brothers made it almost halfway before they drove off the road into a ditch.

“Luckily, they didn't pass anybody because they would've probably had a wreck before then,” Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese told the Associated Press.

Their mother, who was unaware they left, kept a set of keys under her floor mat, CNN reported. Deweese told AP authorities couldn't find her for nearly an hour following the incident and are working with Child Protective Services to see if charges should be filed.

The stunt also cost them their home, WSAZ 3 reported. Sharlene Wiseman, who owns the Bronco Junction Apartments where the boys live, told the station the family is no longer welcome because of safety concerns.
