Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, seen speaking at a Phoenix high school in March 2016, will begin airing campaign ads in Arizona as soon as Sept. 2, 2016.

Donald Trump's hard-line immigration policy speech in Phoenix on Wednesday has prompted Hillary Clinton's rival presidential campaign to run television ads in Arizona, a traditional red state where polls have shown the Republican and Democratic nominees running neck and neck.

Sensing possible blowback to the Republican nominee's message, the Clinton campaign will spend at least six figures to start running a TV commercial "Role Models" on local broadcast stations in Arizona starting as soon as Friday, a senior campaign official told The Arizona Republic.

The spot views some of Trump's most controversial statements through the eyes of young children.

The Clinton campaign has made ad buys in the battleground states of Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nebraska, in addition to Arizona.

Earlier, the Clinton campaign invested a similar amount to boost Arizona Democrats' organizing efforts.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., has warned Trump risked losing Arizona if he didn't change his tone and take a more responsible approach to Mexico and border issues.

Since President Harry Truman won Arizona in 1948, only one other Democrat — President Bill Clinton in 1996 — has carried the state.
