Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto continued their dispute Thursday over financing Trump's proposed border wall, this time on social media.

"Mexico will pay for the wall!" Trump tweeted, drawing a response from the Mexican leader a day after their meeting in Mexico City.

"I repeat what I said in person, Mr. Trump: Mexico would never pay for a wall," Peña Nieto wrote.

The exchange echoed a dispute the two had in the hours after their private meeting on Wednesday.

Trump told reporters he and Peña Nieto "didn't discuss" paying for the wall, prompting a Twitter reply from Peña Nieto in which the Mexican president said that "at the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made clear that Mexico would not pay for the wall."

The Republican candidate and aides later said he was referring to the lack of a full-blown discussion about the wall because each leader knew the other's position.
