Breaking down Florida State's current commitments

Wayne E McGahee III
Democrat staff writer

Florida State has 21 commitments for the 2017 class, and seven of them are already on campus.

The Seminoles have four commitments that are considered a five-star by at least one service, and three of them are already on campus.

They boast the best running back class in the country, and have filled their needs at every position.

*Note: Comp. is referring to the 247Sports composite ranking which compiles the 247, ESPN, Scout, and Rivals rankings into one overall ranking.

Quarterback

FSU has commitments from two quarterbacks with one of them already on campus as an early enrollee.

Bailey Hockman was the first quarterback that FSU offered this cycle, and committed to FSU after decommitting from Georgia. He is the more immediately ready quarterback of the two, and will compete for the back-up quarterback job in the spring after enrolling in January.

The Seminoles didn’t plan on taking a second quarterback this cycle, but James Blackman didn’t give the coaching staff a choice.

He came to the July Jimbo Fisher Camp and had a phenomenal day. He earned an offer on the spot, and committed shortly after. He shut down his recruitment despite interest from West Virginia and Florida in January.

Running Back

Most other college football program in the country would love to have just one Top-150 running back commitment in their recruiting class. FSU has three.

Cam Akers, who is already on campus, finished as the No. 1 running back and No. 2 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings, which combines the 247, ESPN, Scout, and Rivals rankings into an overall ranking system.

Akers is the highest rated commitment FSU has landed since Mario Edwards Jr. in 2012. He is the tied for the highest rated offensive recruit in FSU history with Lorenzo Booker. Both Booker and Edwards Jr. finished as the No. 2 player overall for their class.

He is one of the most dynamic players in the country and was named the U.S. Army player of the year.

Next, FSU has Khalan Laborn, who finished as the No. 4 running back and the No. 28 overall player in the class. He was named the MVP of the Under Armour All-American game.

Akers and Laborn are the first out-of-state running backs FSU has landed since Jimbo Fisher became head coach.

Then there’s Zaquandre White, who has been committed to FSU for nearly two years. He finished as the No. 8 running back and the No. 142 player overall.

All three bring different things to the table, and all three will compete for playing time immediately.

Breaking down FSU's recruiting targets with Signing Day closing in

Wide Receiver

FSU has two wide receiver commitments. One has been in the spotlight since he was in middle school, while the other has popped up on the radar over the last few months.

D.J. Matthews is the top slot receiver in the country.

He doesn’t have great size, but he is one of the most electric players in the country with the ball in his hand. He’s been garnering interest as a prospect since he was in middle school.

He has been committed to FSU since July 2014.

Tamorrion Terry has popped up on the recruiting scene over the last few months. He has everything you could want in a wide receiver – The size, speed, hands, and athleticism – except for one thing.

Grades.

Terry may or may not qualify this cycle, and could end up at a JUCO instead of FSU. He still needs a qualifying test score to even have a chance of making it in.

Tight End

FSU has two tight end commitments for the class with one already on campus.

Tre’ McKitty flipped from Oregon to FSU in December and enrolled in January. He is very athletic and an excellent receiver. He will need time to develop as a blocker, but he certainly has the ability to be an impact player during his career.

No one knows how good FSU’s other tight end commit, Alexander Marshall, is. Not the Seminoles coaching staff. Not the recruiting experts. No one.

That’s because he was a giant among children playing high school football in Maine. He dominated like a FSU caliber player should have. He has good hands, and a mean streak as a blocker.

His best football is clearly ahead of him.

Offensive line

FSU only has one offensive line commitment this cycle after taking six last year.

Brady Scott is being recruited to play center at FSU. He was a relative unknown as a football recruit when FSU offered him in July.

He had previously been committed to South Carolina to play baseball, which is one of the reasons for his low ranking.

Defensive end

The Seminoles have two defensive end commitments with one already on campus.

Joshua Kaindoh is the No. 2 defensive end and the No. 9 player overall in the class. He has the ideal size to play on either side of the line, and is one of the top pass rushers in the country.

He was previously committed to Maryland before backing off his commitment in November.

He was the best player during the week leading up the Under Armour game, and dominated the game itself. He early enrolled.

Defensive ends coach Brad Lawing identified and offered Tre Lawson before anyone else, and that paid off in the end.

Lawson committed to Tennessee in June before decommitting from the Volunteers in December. He committed to FSU last Sunday.

He is raw as a prospect, but has great size and a good motor.

Defensive tackle

FSU has two defensive tackle commits, and they know each other pretty well.

Cory Durden and Ja’len Parks are cousins and have been playing beside each other since they were little.

Now they will be playing beside each other at FSU.

Parks is considered the better of the two because he performs better in camp settings, but Durden is a good player in his own right.

Parks will be able to play either inside at defensive tackle or outside at defensive end. Durden will start out at defensive tackle, but has the ability to play on the offensive line as well.

Linebacker

FSU has two linebacker commits this cycle with one already on campus.

Adonis Thomas is a JUCO linebacker that will have three years to play three at FSU. He originally signed with Alabama out of high school, but didn’t fit the system as well as he thought he did.

He left for Northwest Mississippi Community College after a redshirt year in Tuscaloosa. He will be an immediate help to a linebacker position that has lacked depth for the last few years. He enrolled at FSU in December.

DeMarco Artis is one of the most underrated prospects in the country.

He is an excellent pass rusher off the edge, but has also shown that he is able to drop back in coverage.

Of all the current commitments that FSU has, his commitment is the shakiest. He is still considering Oregon and Baylor.

FSU boasts another top recruiting class

Cornerback

Florida State has two cornerback commitments with one already on campus.

Stanford Samuels III is a FSU legacy that is one of the top cornerbacks in the country. He has the size, ability, and technique to come in and immediately vie for playing time this spring after early enrolling.

He has been one of the top recruiters for the Seminoles this cycle.

Ontaria Wilson is FSU’s only offensive or defensive commitment that isn’t ranked. FSU wanted it that way to keep other schools from picking up on him.

The Seminoles kept their recruitment of Wilson silent before taking his commitment last week. He is teammates with Terry.

Wilson has the size and athleticism to play anywhere in the FSU secondary, but seems most suited to playing cornerback.

Safety

FSU has two safety commitments in the class with one already on campus.

Cyrus Fagan committed to FSU last February, and is considered one of the top safeties in the country. He is rated as the 96th ranked player overall and the 12 ranked safety.

He has great range, but also has the size to play well against the run.

DeCalon Brooks is a FSU legacy that is coming in to play the Money role that Nate Andrews played as a freshman.

He is undersized, but is a good football player that understands the game.

Special Teams

FSU is bringing in long snapper Grant Glennon as a grey shirt.

He will not come in with the rest of the class in June, but will wait to enroll till December after current long snapper Stephen Gabbard’s senior year is over.
