Chicago Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo (9) is guarded by Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas (4) during the first quarter in game two of the first round of the 2017 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden.

The Chicago Bulls announced point guard Rajon Rondo is out indefinitely after suffering a right thumb fracture during Game 2 against the Boston Celtics Tuesday night.

Rondo, whose postseason play has been a catalyst for the Bulls, was averaging close to a triple-double through the first two games of the series, both of which Chicago won. The veteran point guard posted 11.5 points, 10 assists and 8.5 rebounds as the eighth-seeded Bulls surprisingly held a 2-0 advantage over the Celtics.

Celtics PG Isaiah Thomas is back with the team after spending a little bit of time with his family in Washington state following the tragic death of his sister this past weekend. The Celtics badly need a win Friday night to maintain a realistic shot at advancing to the second round.

Surgery won't be required, the team announced on Friday, but that doesn't make the Bulls' immediate task of upsetting the Celtics any easier. The onus will shift even more to Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade, who thus far have helped stabilized the Bulls' offense in the postseason.
