PHOENIX — The Dallas Cowboys might not be any closer to a resolution on Tony Romo's future, but owner Jerry Jones provided some insight on the franchise's timeline for a next move with the quarterback.

Jones said at the NFL meetings Tuesday that he would like to have a decision made "before training camp."

Jones would not clarify whether Romo had told him that he wants to play, but he said he had spoken with the four-time Pro Bowl selection in the last couple days.

"He's really doing great," Jones said. "He's got a lot of options."

Meanwhile, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wasn't offering any Romo news during his media session.

That didn't stop reporters from asking a few questions about the veteran quarterback, who has been in limbo as the Cowboys try to trade him — an effort that so far hasn't yielded a deal.

Can you give us an update on Tony?

"Yeah, nothing really to update. Nothing's really changed since the end of the season," Garrett said. "It's a situation that we're working through. He and (owner) Jerry Jones are the principal people in working that situation through, and it's really been status quo."

Would you guys like to trade him and get a draft choice instead of having him walk away?

"Yeah, I don't want to get into the specifics of all of that," Garrett said. "We'll just continue to work through that situation."

Knowing him like you do over the years, what do you think he's capable of in terms of durability and performance if he is healthy?

"Tony's been a great football player in this league for a long time, been a great football player for our organization," Garrett said.

"He can play the game at a high level. He played one series this past year for us and was very productive like he has been throughout his career. And durability has been an issue the last couple years. So, nobody really knows how he can handle the course of a 16-game season. But that's true for everybody. You take that risk with every player on your roster. He's been a great football player for us for a long time. We've been fortunate to have him."

Does Tony want to play?

"That's not a question for me."

The Cowboys have moved forward with rookie Dak Prescott after an injury during the 2016 preseason once again took Romo off the field. Garrett also said the team feels good about Kellen Moore, the backup quarterback it re-signed last week.

But when it came to any specifics about the team's plan, or Romo's, or how all this ends ... this wasn't the place for definitive answers from Garrett.

If he's still on your roster, will he participate in the offseason program?

"Again, that's a hypothetical situation," Garrett said. "Again, we'll work through this situation day by day. Nothing's changed since the end of this year."
